Development & Communications Coordinator

Reports to: Head of School   
Status: Full-time 30 hours per week  
Location: Asheville, NC


Role Overview

The Development & Communications Coordinator drives the operational success of Hanger Hall’s advancement efforts. This role manages data, executes targeted campaigns, coordinates school communications, and supports admissions through marketing. 


Key Responsibilities


1. Marketing & Communications (45%)

  • Content & Publications: Publish parent newsletter, coordinate the annual report, and produce storytelling content and photography highlighting the student experience.
  • Digital & Web: Maintain a weekly social media calendar and regularly update website content to keep branding and admissions messaging current.
  • Admissions Marketing: Create and distribute admissions marketing materials, promote open houses, and track marketing ROI to help target prospective families.
  • Public Relations: Act as the primary contact for local media and community partners while ensuring brand consistency across all platforms.


2. Development & Fundraising (40%)

  • Annual Fund: Manage the annual fund campaign (direct mail, digital appeals, and donor acknowledgments) with a starting goal of achieving $75K and 25% growth in parent participation.
  • Major Gifts Support: Support the Head of School and Board in major gift cultivation by conducting prospect research, preparing donor briefing materials, and scheduling. (Note: Direct solicitation is handled by the Head of School.)
  • Events: Partner with the Director of Community Life to oversee the operational planning and execution of fundraising events.


3. Board Support & Administration (15%)

  • Board Reporting: Prepare reports for Board meetings, track fundraising, and support the Board development & marketing committee.
  • Database Management: Maintain the donor database (Raiser’s Edge/Blackbaud) to ensure accurate gift processing and acknowledgements.


Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: 3–5 years in development, marketing, or nonprofit management (Independent school experience preferred).
  • Skills: Exceptional visual storytelling and writing skills; proficiency in Blackbaud/Raiser's Edge, Canva/Adobe Creative Suite, and social media analytics.
  • Mindset: Highly organized, strong attention to detail and follow-through, collaborative, and comfortable balancing multiple projects in a close-knit school environment.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required


Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: Starts at $50,000 annually.
  • Incentive Structure: This position offers a potential annual performance bonus ranging from $5,000-$7,000. Bonus distribution is evaluated based on measurable success in key advancement areas, including Annual Fund totals, parent participation rates, database management accuracy, the execution of the annual communications plan, and overall event outcomes.

Academic Support Assistant (Part-Time)
Location: Hanger Hall School
Hours: 20/week
Reports to: Head of School

Position Summary:
The Academic Support Assistant is a part-time position. This individual will play a key role in helping students navigate academic challenges by offering targeted support with assignments, projects, time management, and study skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Academic Support: Provide individualized and small group support with homework assignments, project work (including assistance with the writing process), and preparation for tests and quizzes. Help students stay on track academically while fostering confidence, independence, and effective learning habits.
  • Study Skills and Executive Function Coaching: Support students in building organization systems, developing time management strategies, and strengthening study habits to promote long-term academic success.
  • Collaboration with Teachers and Staff: Communicate regularly with teachers to understand students’ academic needs and progress. Share feedback to support classroom instruction and inform intervention plans.
  • Afternoon Homework Help Sessions: Lead structured homework help sessions four afternoons a week from 3:00–5:00 PM, providing students with a quiet, supportive environment to complete assignments, receive academic guidance, and develop productive study routines.
  • Flexible Support Delivery: Offer support during study halls, designated extra help times, afterschool, and scheduled class periods, adapting to the needs of both students and the school schedule.
