As the only single-gender middle school for girls in western North Carolina, Hanger Hall is committed to providing a strong academic foundation in addition to strengthening the emotional and social development of girls this age. Middle school girls who enter high school confident and with great self-esteem are more confident and therefore more  likely to make good decisions.  According to Jeanne Smolkin, President of the Asheville AAUW “Miss Representation is a powerful documentary that shows how advertising on TV and in magazines depicts girls and young women as caricatures, uses them as sex objects to sell products, and teaches them that they have no worth unless they conform to an impossible standard of beauty.  This movie is a great first step in opening girls’ eyes so that they can see advertising for what it is: manipulative, self-serving, and false. And let’s hope some of them have the courage to buck the system, follow their own dreams, and see their own value no matter what their shape, weight, or monetary fortune.”

Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

In a society where media is the most persuasive force shaping cultural norms, the collective message that our young women and men overwhelmingly receive is that a woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader.  While women have made great strides in leadership over the past few decades, the United States is still 90th in the world for women in national legislatures, women hold only 3% of clout positions in mainstream media, and 65% of women and girls have disordered eating behaviors.Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective. >Below are a couple of highlights regarding the fall play and the   October meeting.

>FALL PLAY:
>Thank you to all of those who volunteered to help.  We still need a   few volunteers, specifically, we need (1) someone to coordinate the   pizza order (call the order into Papa John’s and be available to   receive order),  (2) a few people to help with set-up on Tuesday, Nov.   15th at 9am (we are hoping to get most of the set up done on Monday,   but there will be some things to do on Tuesday), and (3) volunteers  to  help with clean-up immediately following the play.

>Other play info:
>We will be selling concessions at the play, including pizza and   possibly salad.
>There will be a Cake Walk held prior to the start of the play – not at   intermission.
>Rachel Fagan will be selling 4 1/4 page ads to include in the program.
>Toby Maurer has agreed to take cast photos of the girls in costume.    An order form to purchase will be included in the program.

>OTHER MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:
>At the next meeting, the PTC will be voting on which Teacher Wish List   items they are able to fund based on revenues from the fall play.

>Carol Craig introduced the Great Lakes Scrips program – a fundraiser   where families can purchase gift cards (for the face value cost) and   Hanger Hall receives a percentage.  Information will be sent home and   an info table will be available at the Fall Play.

>We are still looking for several key positions for the PTC:
>Secretary
>People to coordinate social activities
>Newsletter/Website Coordinator

I hope you all are enjoying the last few weeks of summer. Our Camp Kick-Off (previously known as Camp Keystone) trip is just around the corner! YAY! We will meet at the school, Tuesday, August 30 at 7:45 am. We will return Thursday, September 1 at 3pm. We will not be going to Keystone this year. Instead we will go to Camp Glen Arden in Tuxedo, NC with a program led by Inside Out, an experiential education organization.

Cost

The total trip cost $225. Make checks out to Hanger Hall. The fee is due August 26, 2011.

Never Been Away from Home? Homesick Daughter? Not a Strong Swimmer? Needs Daily Medications?

Please contact us before the trip if your daughter does not know how to swim or if she is sometimes anxious when sleeping away from home. Knowing this information in advance is crucial and extremely helpful. We will collaborate and strategize with you to help make camp as comfortable and fun for your daughter as possible. We would also like to dispense any medications your daughter may bring with her. Please let us know and we will send a form for you to fill out.

What is Camp Kick-Off all About?

We typically discuss Camp Kick-Off (Keystone) during the admissions meeting and at orientation. If you have not heard about Camp Kick-Off, here are a few facts. Each year the entire school goes to a local camp the week before school starts. It is a time when we build community and have loads of fun. We like to play together and get to know each other (or reconnect) before cracking the books. This year we will be going to Camp Glen Arden in Tuxedo. The counselors of Inside Out will lead all kinds of great camp activities during the 3 days. The Hanger Hall staff and all the girls will tackle a ropes course, make crafts, play team building games and more. Staff and students will stay in cabins. We always mix up the grade levels in the cabins: a few 6th, 7th and 8th graders with a staff member. It is a wonderful bonding experience for the girls and staff.

Camp is always a blast, and we always come back tuckered out. Expect a glowing yet exhausted girl. Again, please let us know if your daughter has never been away from home, is not a strong swimmer, or needs daily medications. The more communication the better, in terms of being able to best support your daughter.
