Marietta started teaching at Hanger Hall in 2004 as the Art teacher. It was love at first sight! She now teaches Humanities in the 6th grade as well as art to the entire school.
Her art education began as a child in her father’s art studio in Nashville Tn. She attended all girls’ school through high school (uniforms all the way!) She doubled majored in Art and Creative Writing at Murray State University in Ky. While living in Atlanta she studied photography at the Art Institute of Atlanta, and after moving to Asheville in 1996, she attended studio art classes at UNCA.
Over the years, she has traveled in Europe and Africa, designed and built houses in Seaside Fl, maintained at studio at home, exhibited her paintings in several galleries in Fl and Tn . Prior to teaching at Hanger Hall, she taught private art lessons. Teaching at Hanger Hall gives her the opportunity to continue the legacy of classical education she received in her father’s studio as well pass on the amazing experience and education she had at the all girls’ academy.
The focus of the art classes at Hanger Hall is the development of classical drawing and painting skills. These studio classes provide the opportunity for each girl to discover her talents and creativity. The art studio hums with activity and creativity. Each grade has several projects over the year. The projects are designed to showcase a variety of art forms so that each girl has the chance to experiment with different mediums. From color pencil self-portraits, pastel still life, painting on canvas to Project Runway, the girls have a full art experience. . Marietta developed the Winter and Spring Arts Festivals as a way for the girls to exhibit their work and have the rich experience of seeing their art on display in a larger venue outside the classroom.
The Humanities classes include Ancient History and Literature. These classes are designed to give the girls a rich background in the ancient world from the Ice Age to Ancient Rome. The Literature classes include novels and epic poems. Marietta studied with many brilliant scholars who inspired a love and passion for these subjects. She passes this on to her students in lively discussions, skits, and event projects.
Marietta has had the joy and privilege of being a part of Hanger Hall almost from the beginning. She has helped to grow the school and the school has enlivened and enriched her life.
She is the mother of two grown children, Elizabeth and Trey and grandmother to three delightful children – Samuel, 8; William, 6 and Eleanor 2.
