Beth Ripley

Science Teacher

Beth is the science teacher at Hanger Hall and has been working at the school for the last four years.  It is hard for Beth to name her favorite thing about her job because there are too many exciting things to choose from.  Whether it is digging through her classroom worm bin, making volcanoes, dissecting mice, mixing chemicals, designing a weather station, or examining wild flowers, Beth loves the hands on activities during weekly labs.  She particularly looks forward to the science fair because the students are able to study the topics that they find fascinating and design their own original experiment.  Beth loves to see her students showcase their projects during this all school science fair.

Beth graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a major in environmental sciences and a minor in biology.  After college, Beth went to Hawaii to work on a sea turtle project on the Big Island.  She later worked in Washington state as a naturalist with middle and high school students.  Feeling a call to work with young adults, Beth then moved to western North Carolina to work with at-risk youth in a wilderness therapy program.  Always wanting a degree in higher education, she later moved to Charleston, South Carolina to earn her masters degree in environmental studies.

Beth has always loved the mountains and enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, trail running, and kayaking .  Now that Beth has a new addition to her family (her son Olen was born in February 2011), she has a constant companion on these outdoor adventures.  Beth and her family live on a farm in Marshall where they practice sustainable farming raising a variety of livestock and growing a family garden.
